I was sorely disappointed with this album when it first came out. I couldn't help but think, "She followed up Once Upon a Time with this?!" Even now, nearly four decades later, it fails to move me the way OUAT—or for that matter, even I Remember Yesterday or Four Seasons of Love does.
And then to have it followed only by the greatest hits album, On the Radio, which seemed like nothing more than a contractually-obligated release to end her relationship with Casablanca Records…
While Donna did put out a few very catchy, danceable songs afterward, IMHO there were never again any whole albums that spoke to me the way her mid-Casablanca releases did.
Still have all her albums on vinyl, and I agree that "Once Upon a Time" is the best album of all of them.
When "Love to Love You, Baby" came out, I bought a Quadrophonic stereo simply to experience the full orgasmic experience. She, the song and stereo didn't disappoint. I had never heard anything remotely similar to this breathy, hedonistic paean to sex. "Once Upon a Time" is where I fell in love with her. "Heaven Knows" sealed our love for eternity. She disappointed me when she allegedly disparaged gays and then later when she refused to own her disco heritage, saying she had NEVER sung a disco song in her life.
Matters not at this point. She and I spent many magical nights on the pulsing dance floor at His Co Disco, HotBod's, Connection, Sammy's during a time I hold dear. For that alone I owe her my undying love.
You know I adored her when I sat through a totally insipid piece of shit— "Thank God It's Friday"—just to hear her sing "Last Dance").
